In the fall of 1996, a local high school winter guard program hoped to compete at the Winter Guard International World Championships but discovered they would be unable to attend. With the support of dedicated staff and performers, they set out to create an independent ensemble based in North Carolina.
 

Since its inaugural season in 1997, First Flight has become an accomplished competitive ensemble, earning recognition as a 2-time Independent A finalist, 5-time WGI Independent Open finalist, and 4-time Independent World finalist.
 

In 2026, First Flight earned its first WGI medal, capturing the Independent Open Class Championship at the WGI World Championships. As the organization enters its 30th anniversary season, First Flight will compete in Independent World Class for the 2027 season.

First Flight competes in several local and national events each year, culminating their season at the Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.
